Welcome to Smokin Jim's BBQ

The main purpose of this page is to inform people about real BBQ. Real BBQ is not cooked on a grill and certainly not in the oven with BBQ sauce and liquid smoke. Real BBQ is made by slow cooking for a long time at a low temperature with wood smoke for flavour.

I was introduced to this style of cooking while at a Country Music festival in Minnesota in 1995. The Outdoor Store from Minneapolis, Mn. had an OK Joe demonstration set up and I was immediately hooked. After taking as many measurements as possible, I went home to Manitoba and proceeded to build my first pit. Since then I have built 3 more offset pits and also have acquired "BERTHA", a JR Oyler commercial pit from Danny (the "Q-man") Gaulden of Carlsbad, N.M.. I have also just built a "Stumps" clone.  Danny has been a wonderful help to me over the years and he and his wonderful wife Carolyn have hosted 2 Q-fests in the Carlsbad area, with over 100 people from all over N. America attending the last one.

I am striving to set up a Southern style BBQ catering service in Manitoba, Canada and on the following pages is information on the type of services that I will be providing. Please browse through the pages and if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me.

I have also set up the Prairie BBQ Association Forum, which there is a link to on this page. This is a free Association where people can come and go as they please. In the future we hope to get involved in some charity fund raising BBQ's in our area. If you are a volunteer based charity and would like our help, please contact me for information.
